Schools of big striped bass were less widespread and often concentrated in discrete areas at specific times, which likely reflects the documented decline in numbers of large stripers. After leaving coastal Massachusetts, tagged striped bass moved south at an average rate of 6 km/day, entering the coastal waters of Virginia off the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in early-to-mid January.
