RIVERSIDE: This is the best map to hole up in hands down. There are a couple of good bases but the best is the bar north of town, it is far away from the horde but close to resources. I'm an incorrigible hoarder; I set up base wherever I feel like it, then I ferry everything back to my base. I don't make forward bases, I go out with a big truck and trailer and cart things home, systematically looting city by city and growing my stockpile; If I ever overfill my coffers, I'll find some silly task to splurge on like building a metal fort or a wooden stadium, then go loot more.

Also, spawning is based on areas being unseen for a few days, so after a bit, any areas you frequent regularly should remain relatively clear. Sure the bigger towns mean more loot as well but the zombies are very thick here and it's very open.
