For hydraulic, you are right - tighten to 0 clearance as indicated by lifting the rocker up and down at the valve, until movement stops, then go another 1/4 to 1/2 turn. 1/2 turn is recommmnded for low perf and stock rebuilds. Make sure the lock nuts still grip tight, as it should take maybe 5-10 ft lb to make them turn.

Rather than spinning the pushrod and attempting to get the correct 'feel', hold the pushrod between two fingers and lift the pushrod up and down while slowly tightening the adjustment nut. When you reach the point where there is no more up and down movement you will be at 0 lash. Tighten an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

I usually go 1/2 turn, some of the manuals call for 2 turns, it won't affect the running under normal conditions. When we used to race a hydraulic engine we woud try to get them at zero so if the valves floated they wouldn't pump up. What you are trying to do is center the lifter so it can correct either way, two turns won't bottom it out.
